WELCOMING MESSAGE FROM AMBASSADOR CELSO AMORIM, MINISTER FOR FOREIGN RELATIONS OF BRAZIL
One year after its inception in the lead-up to the Cancún Ministerial Conference, Brazil is pleased to inaugurate, as a tribute to that date, the G-20 official site with information on its Member countries, proposals, statements and press communiqués.
Congregating developing countries from three continents, representing the majority of the world rural population and a sizeable share of international trade on agricultural products, the G-20 has consolidated itself as a central player in WTO trade negotiations.
The Group is committed to the program set out in the Doha Development Agenda, in which agriculture constitutes its center piece. In particular, the Group seeks to address distortions and restrictions affecting agricultural trade, regarding export subsidies and other export enhancement measures, trade-distorting domestic support and hindrances to the access of developing countries products. Furthermore, as contained in the mandate, the Group pursues to develop operational and effective special and differential treatment mechanisms with a view to addressing food security and livelihood concerns of rural populations.
Brazil welcomes the decision taken by the General Council on August 1st to adopt a framework, an important step in the Doha Round. Likewise, the G-20 has supported such decision, in view of its important participation in that process. Notwithstanding much remains to be done with a view to translating the Doha Development agenda into reality. Brazil reaffirms its determination to continue its joint work with the G-20 and to strengthen it, as well as its relations with other Groups and other members with a view to a successful conclusion of the Round.
